The company takes great pride in offering their valued clientele a variety of innovative irrigation solutions while providing secure and uplifting employment for 60+ employees from a variety of backgrounds and communities.
According to current owner and managing director, Paul van den Berg, they see their team as family. “We care for our employees as people, and that goes far beyond their impact in the workplace. Our corporate culture is based on providing a healthy and happy work environment where our employees are free to grow and flourish in their roles throughout the enterprise. With this as our foundation, we are able to give our clients the best service possible whenever they do business with Bekmar.”
Originally established in 2000 by Annemarie Coetzee and the late Bekker van Rooyen, managing director Paul van den Berg joined Bekmar Irrigation as designer in 2002 and took over ownership of the business in its entirety in 2010. Today, he continues to drive the growth of the company in a tough economy because he believes that the service they provide is essential to the wellbeing and longevity of agricultural enterprises throughout South Africa.
“At its core, our vision is to supply South African growers and agricultural businesses with effective irrigation systems that use water and energy as efficiently as possible,” explains Van den Berg. “However, it goes beyond that. We are as a tipping point as a nation and a global community – climate change and unprecedented population growth are placing more pressure on our agricultural producers than ever before.
“We need to work sparingly with our precious natural resources, and that starts with how we grow the food we eat. By staying at the forefront of innovation and making sure our farmers have access to the latest irrigation information and technology, we at Bekmar strive to do our bit to safeguard our natural heritage for generations to come and ensure food security for the people of South Africa in the face of many challenges.”
Bekmar started out as a small retain store, but manage to become a market leader in low volume irrigation systems and technology in the irrigation industry by focusing on the quality of their products and the dependability of their unwavering customer service.
“When you invest in an irrigation solution from Bekmar, you’re getting far more than just hoses and fittings,” says Van den Berg. “We pride ourselves on providing our valued clientele with the best advice and support in the business. As such, each and every one of our clients benefit from our years of experience in the industry, and our ability to provide ongoing support even after the systems have been installed. If you partner with us as a producer, you can rest assured that our overall aim is to work together to make your business more profitable and sustainable.”
DID YOU KNOW? The earliest known systems of irrigation began in 6000 BC in Egypt and Mesopotamia. In Egypt, the Nile flooded for a few months each year, and the waters were diverted to the fields to allow farmers to grow crops where otherwise they would be unable to do so. The first major irrigation project was created under King Menes om 3100 BC during Egypt’s First Dynasty. He and his successors used dams and canals (one measuring 20 km) to use the diverted flood waters of the Nile into a new lake called lake ‘Moeris’.
